Facial Slimming/Masseteric Hypertrophy
Sometimes the jaw can become wider with age because the masseter muscles responsible for closing the jaw become enlarged, especially in people who clench and grind their teeth. The face shape becomes squarer, and treatment may be sought to reduce the size of these muscles for aesthetic reasons. Treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin into each masseter muscle.
NB: Due to the dental origin or aetiology, this treatment should only be carried out by a dental surgeon specialising in this field.
